evening. at the end of the most violent day yet in the battle between israel and the hamas government in gaza, secretary of state hillary clinton arrived in jerusalem to try to broker a cease-fire. but late today things looked frosty between the secretary and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. faces were long and comments were short. she had just flown ten hours, leaving president obama behind on a tour of cambodia throughout this day there were rumors of peace but israel unleashed a ferocious bombardment of gaza from air and sea. the palestinians and gaza fired back. since this started last week, 133 palestinians have been killed in 1,500 israeli air strikes. five israelis have died after more than one thousand rockets rained down from gaza. we have correspondents on both sides of the line, first charlie d'agata in gaza. >> reporter: city skyline was filled with smoke as israeli tanks fired shells followed by air strikes. when we drove to one neighborhood to take a closer look, another strike came in. the bomb landed less than a hundred yards from us. residents scrambled for

blakeman will be on to give the liberal jewish perspective on the israel palestine palestinian situation. now to lisa ferguson for a current news update. >> good morning, everyone. after a very busy visit abroad president obama has a pretty busy day ahead of him. the white house invited everyone to vote on these two turkeys, cobbler and gobbler on facebook to judge your favorite but while they make look the same they are very different. cobbler likes cranberries, and gobbler likes corn. no matter which turkey gets the most votes both get to retire happily at mount vernon. pita is saying this makes light of the slaughter of the 46 million birds during this holiday. this white house tradition has more than a century and a half history behind it. but pita says it is belittling for the turkeys, and doesn't cake their feelings into account. and we do have some serious news going on today. hillary clinton is in the middle east working to de-escalate the violence between israel and hamas. they do all plan to keep in close touch as clinton travels to cairo. more john next.

toward the middle of the whole middle east is the nation of israel, comparatively tiny. if you want to understand where the fighting is centered, you have to zoom in even further to a whole different scale to even be able to see what the relevant border is over which this fighting is happening. looking at it in that context, you might ask, what's that giant border right next to this relativity tiny place being fought over? that's egypt. that's the egyptian border right up next to this tiny strip of land where the fighting is happening in gaza. that's why part of why this was such a big deal. egypt and israel shaking hands. thank you jimmy carter. the peace treaty between this important country, the nation of israel. but jimmy carter, it turns out, is not only the only live american historical connection to this critically-important relationship that you see diagrammed there. the president of egypt who is shaking hands with the prime minister of israel and sealing this peace treaty between these ko countries, this president of egypt, the handshake was in march of 1979. two and a half

. unfortunately, there is no sign of violence easing up yet between israel and hamas. at least 21 people are injured. three seriously after a bomb exploded on a bus in tel aviv around noon local time. witnesses are telling us authorities they saw a man running toward the bus tossing a bag and running away. police have launched a massive manhunt and believe the explosion is a terrorist attack. israel continues its assault on targets in gaza with more than 100 hit overnight. militants in gaza are firing back having launched an estimated 200 rockets back at israel. jay carney has released a statement from the white house administration calling the bus attack in tel aviv outrageous and affirming the united states's security. hamas not taking responsibility for the bus bomb but celebrating it. while secretary of state clinton is in cairo trying to negotiate a cease-fire between israel and hamas with the help of egypt she is closely monitoring reports from tel aviv and in constant contact with prime minister benjamin netanyahu's
